Met Police Cuts Create Security Challenges For London Businesses

The confirmed reduction of 1,700 Metropolitan Police officers, PCSOs and staff will force London businesses to reassess their security provisions, according to leading UK security provider Assist Security Group (ASG).

The Metropolitan Police faces a £260 million budget shortfall resulting in major service cuts. Troy Hewitt, CEO of Assist Security Group, warns these cuts will create immediate security implications for corporate facilities and public venues:

“The reduction in Met Police resources creates a security gap that security directors and facilities managers must address. With fewer officers available for response and other policing, organisations need robust, independent security strategies to maintain appropriate protection levels.”

ASG provides bespoke security services to the luxury hotel and retail sectors, tourist and entertainment venues, as well as to corporate offices and managing agents and hospitals.

The Metropolitan Police had initially faced a £450 million budget gap which could have resulted in even more severe cuts of 2,300 officers. While additional funding from central government and the Mayor’s office reduced this figure, the force still faces what it describes as “substantial tough choices” in the coming year.

“These cuts place extraordinary pressure on the remaining police personnel,” said Hewitt. “Corporate headquarters, retail venues and hospitality establishments that have historically relied on police presence and rapid response times will need to re-evaluate their security risk assessments and consider how professional security providers can help address new vulnerabilities.”

The Metropolitan Police Federation warns that fewer officers on London’s streets will significantly impact the force’s ability to effectively police the capital.

The cuts come despite a record £1.16 billion in funding from City Hall for the coming year, which preserved over 900 neighbourhood policing positions but proved insufficient to prevent wider reductions.

Facilities Directors

For facilities directors already navigating challenging economic conditions, these police cuts present additional security considerations. Retail establishments, corporate offices and entertainment venues across London must evaluate their security provisions to address emerging gaps.

Hewitt commented: “When public security resources contract, facilities directors and security managers need to develop integrated security plans that combine physical measures, technology and trained personnel. We’re seeing increased demand for full-spectrum security reviews that identify vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.”

While the Metropolitan Police plans to achieve these staff reductions through natural attrition and reduced recruitment rather than redundancies, the operational impact will remain significant.

The Mayor of London has indicated he will seek additional central government support during the June spending review, emphasising the need for a multi-year funding deal to provide certainty.

Assist Security Group, with over 30 years of experience protecting commercial clients across multiple sectors, continues to work closely with facilities directors and security managers to develop tailored solutions that address evolving security challenges in London and beyond.

“In this changing security landscape, facility directors need partners who understand both risk assessment methodology and cost-effective mitigation strategies,” Hewitt concluded. “Effective security isn’t simply about replacing police presence with guards, but about designing integrated protection systems that provide sustainable, layered security.
